A savvier approach could see people save a significant amount of money when buying groceries, it has been suggested.
Those looking for
tips for saving when shopping could be interested in guidance outlined in the Herald Sun.
Writing in the Money & Me section of the newspaper, David and Libby Koch point out that in order to spend less cash at grocery stores consumers need to become savvier shoppers.
One way of achieving this, the couple suggests, is by purchasing non-branded items.
In addition, the pair states that people should plan their meals in advance, write a shopping a list and then stick to it.
"The biggest mistake you can make is buying household groceries at a convenience store. They charge top dollar and should only be used to grab the bare essentials in an emergency," it was also claimed.
Consequently, people were urged to shop around on supermarket prices, in addition to investigating what the likes of butcher and greengrocers can offer, in order to get the best possible deal.
However it is not just the grocery aisles where consumers should
compare accounts, Infochoice recently pointed out that a failure to seek out the most competitive
credit cards, saver accounts, mortgages and car loans sees Australians pay out $6.1 billion each year.
