Commonwealth Bank has apologised after a system glitch yesterday left thousands of customers without access to their accounts.
Technical problems at the bank left customers unable to withdraw cash via ATM machines, make payments via EFTPOS, or access their accounts online.
The connected services NetBank and CommSec, the online share trading platform, were also affected.
The bank said on Tuesday that the problem had been fixed and that services were being restored over the course of the day.
"We sincerely apologise to any customer who has been inconvenienced with this disruption to services," said CommBank’s Tracy Hicks.
"Given the high volume of calls into our call centres, customers may experience longer than usual waiting times," she said, thanking customers for their patience.
Customers went online on Monday to complain that their services were not working and that little information was available about the problem.
Retailers also complained that they had lost trade, with customers unable to make payments or access their cash.
There was a note of humour amid the complaints, however, with some home loan customers noticing that their mortgage had vanished when they first logged back in.
